We keep things simple while the platform is in early development.

Your Human Story is an educational historical platform currently in early development. We respect your privacy and aim to collect as little personal information as possible.

Information we collect

You can browse the maps, timelines, and stories without creating an account. If you choose to join our early-access list, we collect the email address you provide so we can send you occasional updates. We may also collect basic usage information to help us improve the site.

How we use information

We use email addresses only to share project updates and never sell them. We use usage data only to understand which features are helpful and to improve the platform. The custom browser identifier described below is pseudonymous, so it should not be treated as an audited or perfectly anonymous measure of people.

Custom analytics identifier

When your browser permits local storage, our custom analytics creates a random 36-character identifier and saves it in your browser under yhs_visitor_id. It is a pseudonymous browser identifier: it is not derived from your name, email address, account, IP address, or other personal details, and we do not use it to identify you. Because it persists in your browser, it may be treated as personal data under applicable law even though it contains no direct PII. It is sent with small analytics events to estimate rolling browser activity; it is not sent to Google Analytics.

You can remove the identifier by clearing this site's local storage or browser data. If you later return, the site creates a new random identifier, so the old and new activity are not linked by that identifier. If storage or browser cryptography is unavailable, no identifier is sent and those events cannot contribute to unique-browser estimates.

In database mode, custom analytics events become eligible for deletion once they are older than 365 days (and may also be trimmed sooner if the table exceeds its volume bound). Cleanup runs periodically as events are inserted—roughly every 500 inserts—so 365 days is not a hard deletion deadline. In file-fallback mode, only the most recent 5,000 events are retained, so activity totals may undercount. The dashboard's rolling browser counts are estimates, not an audited count of people.

Third-party services

As the project grows we may use trusted third-party services for email delivery, donations, and analytics. Where that happens, those services handle data under their own privacy policies.
